#PowerHerDream… Join Us in Powering Black Girl Dreams Across the South!
This Black Philanthropy Month, Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium is launching Power Her Dream, a $130,000 fundraising drive to fuel Black girl joy across the South. Our goal is simple yet powerful: raise $10,000 for each of the 13 states we serve. We’re inviting our community to join one of our 13 State Teams, create personal fundraising pages, and rally their networks to Power Her Dream. Because when we invest in Black girls, we don’t just change individual lives, we transform entire communities and build the foundation for a more just and joyful South!
Fundraise, Donate, Amplify or do all 3 and help us reach our goal by August 31st!
Founded in 2017 by visionary LaTosha Brown and anchors Felecia Lucky (Black Belt Community Foundation), Alice Jenkins (Fund for Southern Communities), and Margo Miller (Appalachian Community Fund), the Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium is a philanthropic organization dedicated to funding Black girls and women across the Southern United States. Operating in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia, Southern Black Girls employs participatory grantmaking approaches that center Black girls’ voices while supporting racial justice, education, health and wellness, economic mobility, and leadership development.
The Facts…

Since our founding in 2017, Southern Black Girls has awarded over $10.2M to 220 Black women-led organizations, and provided over $500k in grants to 925 girls through initiatives like our #BlackGirlJoyChallenge
OUR IMPACT
We have awarded over $10.2M to Black girls and Black women-led organizations that have enabled them to:
Launch innovative mental health initiatives
Like 13-year-old Mila Henry’s who used her #BlackGirlJoy grant to start MH Boxes, a non-profit that provides mental health care packages specifically designed for Black girls, addressing the critical gap in mental health resources for a community often underrepresented in mental health conversations
Address mental health gaps with culturally responsive services
Like Dr. Nadia Richardson’s Black Women’s Mental Health Institute in Birmingham, Alabama, which provides free counseling, screenings, and awareness campaigns across 48 cities and 32 counties, focusing on mental health equity, suicide prevention, and gun violence support
Combat period poverty and advocate for menstrual equity
Like Brooke and Breanna Bennett’s Women In Training, Inc. (WIT), which has distributed over 30,000 WITKITS across Alabama and beyond, ensuring Black girls don’t miss school due to inability to afford sanitary pads
Launch entrepreneurship programs that create lasting business success
Through our Dream Investment Program, which provides 16-week training, mentorship, and financial investment ($1,000 for youth entrepreneurs, $5,000 for early-stage entrepreneurs). Participants like 13 year old Alauna received valuable mentorship and funding for her business, Deja Donut Girl
Transform philanthropy and fund other organizations
Like Ciara “CeCe” Coleman’s Geaux Girl Giving Collective in New Orleans, which has supported 39 organizations through grants and capacity-building programs, including the Perry Second Chances Scholarship and mental health recovery programs
Break financial barriers in sports and create inclusive spaces
Like Milan Waller’s Milan the Golfer Foundation, which makes golf accessible to urban Black girls through free clinics, mentorship, leadership workshops, and “Tee Time Talks” focusing on mental health and personal growth
