Let’s Transform the South Together
Join the movement empowering Black girls and women to lead boldly across the South…
Founded in 2017 by visionary LaTosha Brown and anchors Felecia Lucky (Black Belt Community Foundation), Alice Jenkins (Fund for Southern Communities), and Margo Miller (Appalachian Community Fund), the Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium is a philanthropic organization dedicated to funding Black girls and women across the Southern United States. Operating in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia, Southern Black Girls employs participatory grantmaking approaches that center Black girls’ voices while supporting racial justice, education, health and wellness, economic mobility, and leadership development.
The Facts…

Since our founding in 2017, Southern Black Girls has awarded over $10.2M to 220 Black women-led organizations, and provided nearly $500k in grants to over 800 girls through initiatives like the #BlackGirlJoyChallenge
In addition to raising and distributing money to Black women-led organizations, we host the Black Girls Dream Conference and Joy Is Our Journey bus tour to:
Create transformative spaces where Black girls and women can see themselves in a positive light, discover that their dreams are possible, and leave equipped with the tools, confidence, and community needed to lead boldly in their own lives and communities.
Our Black Girls Dream Conference is more than an event—it’s a life-changing experience featuring a sea of pink, girls cheering, women laughing, and a spirit of love and unity that fills the atmosphere. Through compelling keynote speakers, interactive workshops on mental wellness, financial literacy, STEM, arts and culture, and social justice, dance parties, and networking opportunities, attendees from ages 12 to 112 gather to reflect, reconnect, and rejuvenate their spirits in a safe space where they can be their authentic selves. What sets us apart is that 99% of girls see themselves in a positive light after attending, and they consistently tell us they leave feeling like “their dreams are possible” and motivated to serve their communities.
Our Joy Is Our Journey Bus Tour brings the magic directly to communities across the South, offering free mini-festival experiences for Black girls and femme identifying youth ages 12-24. Each tour stop creates a joyful space to connect and unwind through interactive workshops focused on mental health, wellness, entrepreneurship, and dream-building, complemented by music, food trucks, game stations, and giveaways. The impact is profound: 88% of attendees report that their image of Black girls and women becomes more positive, and 95% are introduced to joy as a self-care and mental health strategy.
Both events serve as powerful recruitment and inspiration tools, connecting participants to our broader ecosystem of support including our grant programs, the #BlackGirlJoyChallenge, Youth Ambassador programs, leadership development opportunities, and more, ensuring that the transformation sparked at these gatherings continues long after the events end.
